Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is an Ecological Sea Kayak Tour?
A: This is conducted on the remote "Western Side" of Mount Desert
Island in Blue Hill Bay or Western Bay. Less boat traffic, no cruise ships, no
motels. A 20 minute van shuttle from our base in Bar Harbor increases the chance
of sighting wildlife, provides less exposure to open ocean, allows for many one-way
(wind at your back) tours and gives you an off-the-beaten-path experience many
folks prefer.
Q: * Choosing your Sea Kayak Outfitter? Ask a few questions.....
A: Ask how many years experience does the outfitter have leading tours in this area.
A: Ask about the outfitter's safety record.
A: Ask how much guide experience does the outfitter have on its active staff.
A: Ask what kind of kayaks & related equipment do they have.
A: Ask about the time length of Sea Kayak Tours.
A: Ask about the maximum group size.
Q: Are Sea Kayaks stable?
A: Yes! The kayaks we use are the Necky Amaruks. Their design
and the fact that they have a rudder make them very stable. In 16 years of operations
only a few have tipped.
Q: Will I see wildlife on my Sea Kayak tour with NPKT?
A: The chances are good. Paddling close to shore and islands increases the
chances. NPKT has a very good record on finding wildlife. Bald eagles, osprey,
cormorant, harbor seals, loons, gulls, terns, and harbor porpoise are the
primary sightings. Please bring a camera on your tour.
Q: How old do I have to be to go on a tour?
A: 8-10 years old or older (4 ft 8 inches tall). Each youth is required
to paddle in a tandem Sea Kayak with an adult. If there is a question on whether
or not a person is OK to go on a tour, please stop by our shop (39 Cottage
St. downtown Bar Harbor) in person.
Q: Can I make a reservation for a tour online?
A: Yes just click (here). Remember,
your reservation is not confirmed until we contact you by phone. We will
take credit card information and answer any outstanding questions at that
point.
Any reservation can be changed/cancelled with a 24 hour notice. We will
do our best to reschedule you. Cancellations with 24 hour notice are refunded
100%.
Q: How far ahead do I need to make a reservation?
A: Generally, 1-2 weeks prior to your vacation to Acadia call us
at
1-800-347-0940 and request the best day and time for your kayak tour. 1
to 2 days in most cases is OK also.
Q: How cold is the water and what is the normal air temperature?
A: Water temps range from high 40's to high 50's through the season (June-Sept.).
Yes it is brisk. Air temps are 70's & 80's (Daytime Highs) and 50's
& 60's (Night). Fresh clean air & water....
Q: What should I wear on a Sea Kayak tour?
A: Most people are comfortable in shorts and a T Shirt. However, it is
a good idea to bring along a windbreaker/sweatshirt. Additional items: hat,
sunglasses, sunscreen, camera, binocs., water/juice, snack, wet water footwear.
